Peterborough’s Chris Culgin has spent the better part of six years bringing his own brand of folk, roots, rock n roll from coast to coast in Canada. In this time, he has put out four records, gone through several vans, had way too many bad cups of coffee and played every nook and cranny from Peterborough, Ontario to Dawson City, Yukon.
In the formative years, Chris got his start playing fiddle, busking on the street and in subways. He was a licensed Toronto subway musician for over three years and capturing an audience in unlikely scenarios was an early jumping off point. It eventually became the basis of the high energy live show today, where the attitude of rock and roll meets the heart of old-time Appalachian fiddle music. These days, the Chris Culgin Band tours as a trio, featuring Matt Greco on drums, Derek Bell on bass and Chris Culgin on electric guitar / synths. They have had the opportunity to grace the stage of the Works and Design Festival, the Peterborough Folk Festival, the Summer Solstice Festival D’ete, and the Sweet Water 905 to name a few.
Chris Culgin’s new record “TOWN” was recorded in the early months of 2018 at the Lincoln County Social Club in Toronto. It was released digitally everywhere, as of July 13th and is set to be released on vinyl with a cross Canada tour beginning August 24th. The recording features the long-standing trio: Derek Bell on bass, Matt Greco on drums and Chris Culgin on guitar / synths. It was mixed by John Dinsmore, known for his work with the Strumbellas and mastered by Fedge. It’s an exciting new sound for the band and they can’t wait to let Humboldt give it a listen.
